We met Dawn and Jim at a South Staffordshire wedding fair last year. Straight away when we began chatting to them we saw how much they were looking forward to getting married at their local church, surrounded by their guests, an understated day without too much extravagance, focussing on their friends and family. So we were really pleased when they booked us to photograph their wedding day.
Eschewing extravagance doesn’t mean that there weren’t lots of lovely touches. Dawn had arranged for a beautiful vintage car to take her to St Nicholas’ Church in Codsall. Since she was getting ready at her mum’s house, just around the corner, the driver Steve took Dawn on a couple of trips around the block to allow Phil to scamper up the alleyway to the church himself to prepare for the ceremony!
This is the point at which I have to mention and thank the amazing Reverend Marg. She made everyone, including me and Phil, so very welcome to her beautiful church, and led a beautiful ceremony full of warmth, humour, solemnity, and love. At the end she even shouted to me at the back to make sure I had caught the first kiss. I gave her a big thumbs up, but am quite sure that if I hadn’t got it, she would have made Dawn and Jim kiss again, as many times as it took! WE LOVE YOU, REV. MARG!
Knot tied, and after a very small handful of group shots, and showers of confetti outside St Nicholas', we all headed across to the nearby Firs social club in Codsall Village for an absolutely great reception. Outside in the garden Dawn and Jim had laid on another lovely idea: lots of funfair games: bash the rat, hoopla, coconut and tin can shys, hook a duck, penny roll, high hammer strike, and my favourite: the buzz wire courtesy of Yellow Duck Events. This in particular led to some really great concentration faces and fun photos!
There was also a traditional ice cream man present, dispensing sweet treats from a cool-box on an old-fashioned tricycle. Of course Phil and I tried some! My favourite flavours were rum and raisin, and lemon posset. Phil’s were Daim Bar and mint choc chip, which tells you everything you need to know about the two of us…
Indoors there was plenty of prosecco, and a great buffet! There were some short but heartfelt speeches that were all about friends and family, and some great dancing from people of all age groups! Throughout the day Phil and I had been accompanied, assisted, and entertained by one of the page boys: Dawn’s awesome grandson Ashton, so we made sure we busted some moves off the dance floor with him. I showed Ashton the radio trigger for our dance floor off-camera flashes, which led him to treat us all to a thirty-second blinding light show, before my finger accidentally brushed against the off switch!
Dawn and Jim: we salute you, and thank you for making us part of your super-special day. Here’s a selection of just a small number of your wedding photos, lots more to come soon.
