It was an enormous pleasure for Phil and me to return to the beautiful Curradine Barns for Katie and Alex’s wedding day. We’d had loads of fun with this couple, and their muddy-pawed dog, at their springtime
Himley Hall pre-shoot with us. So we knew we were in for a treat of a day.
We arrived nice and early to witness the construction of a towering (and slightly rickety) Krispy Kreme doughnut wedding “cake”. There was lots of finger-licking, but no loud noises or sudden moves, as this imposing monument to deliciousness was put together!
Phil and I went our separate ways to photograph bride, and groom, getting ready. I was with Alex and his groomsmen, and was very pleased, as an ex-dentist, to see them all brushing their teeth as the first stage of preparations. As suits went on, I was also slightly alarmed to see that they also appeared to be trying to set fire to each other with a lighter! It turns out that this is an Army trick, to get rid of stray threads and bobbles on woollen suits!
Meanwhile, Phil was upstairs at the Curradine Barns’ bridal preparations suite, where they’d already been treated to a Bridal Breakfast. I stuck my head around the door to say hi, and found a very relaxed and happy bride enjoying being with close friends and family as she got ready. Katie was lucky enough to have hair stylists in the family in the form of SMHeart Hair and Beauty, who after finishing everyone's hair had to head off in time to get ready themselves,as they were guests too.
The ceremony room is a beautifully timeless, atmospheric place, lit by a huge circular chandelier. At the front was a backdrop that had been hand-made by Katie’s dad - a lovely family touch. Katie walked in to the room preceded by her bridesmaids, and escorted by her handyman dad. It was a great ceremony led by Dawn from the Worcester Register Office - particularly the moment when she accidentally said the name of Katie’s brother Jamie rather than Alex’s! Dawn was mortified, but instantly forgiven, and everyone else found it hilarious.
Even though it was late October the weather was mild enough for everyone to spill outside afterwards to congratulate the newlyweds. Katie and Alex were keen on having some rural portrait photos in the nearby fields while the light was still good, and had brought appropriate footwear. Katie really rocked the wedding dress / wellington boots combo!
After a delicious wedding breakfast served by the Barns’ excellent and friendly staff we were treated to some genuinely entertaining speeches from Katie’s dad, Alex, the groomsmen, and a hilarious speech and slide show from Jamie, who had even gone to the trouble of creating a website to poke fun at the groom!
Alongside the doughnut tower was a colourful and charming cake with loads of personal touches made by a member of the family. So it was this that Katie and Alex cut first of all, before also treating each other to a sticky doughnut. Dear reader: I had one too (yum), and I’m pleased to say that the tower of treats didn’t topple.
Phil and I took Katie and Alex outside to cool off in the evening air, and we bagged some really cool evening portraits using our clever radio-controlled flash gear. We were particularly pleased with our gazebo and barn pictures!
Back inside, it was time to hit that dance floor! There was plenty of energy there, and as always I really enjoyed getting stuck in and being part of the fun in order to get some great shots.
